What is Q~Power?

Modern technology brings to us several portable gadgets for various personal uses, from mobile phones to MP3 players or GPS receivers, to mention a few. Due to its portability, most of these devices run on rechargeable batteries. For the home user, recharging the devices is not a problem, as different chargers are usually available at home.

But for the user on the move, for example when riding a motorcycle, carrying various chargers at the same time is not practical, neither the motorcycle itself haves the popular cigarette lighter socket to power the chargers. Except for a short trip, gadgets will run out of batteries and a stop to charge them somewhere else is not practical most of the times. The solution is Q~Power, the ultimate gadget charger for outdoor use in vehicles.

So what is this new product all about?

Q~Power is a modular charging device that allows motorcyclists to power different devices or gadgets, whilst on the move. Due to its unique and environmentally protected design, it can be used on boats and vehicles with demanding operating requirements.

The Q~Power product range offers a wide variety of adapters to charge different gadgets (see chapter 5 for details). Most popular of these are contained in the Q~Power pack version you have purchased. Additional adaptors are available separately to solve your specific powering needs.

Q~Power is a unique solution, because:

1-It was designed and it built having demanding operating environments in mind, that is the parts to be permanently attached to the motorcycle or boat are waterproof.

2-It is a modular product, providing solutions that can be built to each user needs. This means that for example a wide range of power input cables is available from bare ended wires to specific BMW plugs, as well as a very complete range of adapters to match different devices.

3-The core component of the system, the Power supply Unit Box (part # GZM-PSU-BOX), is a strongly built waterproof device that can be ‘sandwiched’ between the cradle and diamond base of a RAM mounting system to form part of the mount itself.

Additionally, if you need to power multiple devices simultaneously, this can be achieved by means of a RAM triple adaptor plate (RAP-333) plus the associated device cradles. One Q~Power box GZM-PSU-BOX is required to power each device and attached to the underside of the adaptor plate. Power input splitter cables are available to provide a common power input point.

For whom is Q~Power?

Q~Power is an excellent charging solution for users riding or driving vehicles with either exposure to difficult environmental conditions, such as rain, direct sun exposure, vibration, etc. Examples are:

-Motorcycles.

-Boats, either recreational or professional.

And of course in other applications where a RAM® mounting system is used, or even standalone, such as:

-4x4 vehicles / ATV's

-Recreational aircraft (only trough car lighter adapters)

Versatility and building blocks

Q~Power was designed devoting a strong attention to versatility. The result is a system with unique features for building an initial solution and expand it as the needs evolve. There are three basic sections in a Q~Power system solution:

1-The power input cables

These are the cables that connect to users motorcycle, boat or other vehicle electrical system. There are different types available, from bare wire ended to specific BMW or Goldwing connections. All these cable end in a waterproof connector that plugs to the power box.

In addition, splitters are available for cases where more than one device is to be powered simultaneously using same connection to the vehicle electrical system.
This versatile design allows a user with more than one vehicle, for example a motorcycle and a car, to move the device with its cradle with a simple plug disconnection.

2-The Power supply box
This is the core component of the system and can be used either integrated in a RAM mounting system or standalone. It converts the vehicle electrival voltage to the needs of the gadgets to be powered. This box haves two leads for input and output respectively.

3-The power output section
These are the components of the system that connect to the devices to be charged. There are output cables, extension cable, and adapters, a range of connector like parts for the different devices.

Q~Power Components

1-Q~Power Input Components

A power input cable is required and connects to your motorcycle or boat 12 volt DC power. These cables are equipped with a special waterproof male connector that plugs into the Q~Power converter box GZM-PSU-BOX input lead. They can also connect to one of three splitters GZM-PWIN-SPLx for multiple system use.

	GZM-PWIN-001 Bare ended input cable For direct wiring to the motorcycle electrical system, includes an inline splash proof fuseholder. Cable: 1.5 metre long.
	GZM-PWIN-002 Bendable BMW plug, short For BMW motorcycles with a dashboard power socket and is equipped with a 90 degree bendable fused power plug for a convenient position. Cable: 30 cm long.
	GZM-PWIN-003 Bendable BMW plug, long For BMW motorcycles with under seat power socket, and is equipped with a 90 degree bendable fused power plug for a more convenient cable positioning, to avoid obstructing the riders leg. Cable: 1.40 metres long.
	GZM-PWIN-004 Standard BMW plug, short For BMW motorcycles with dashboard power socket, and is equipped with a suitable fused power plug. Cable: 30 cm long.
	GZM-PWIN-005 Standard BMW plug, long For BMW motorcycles with under seat power socket, and is equipped with a suitable fused power plug. Cable: 1.40 metres long.
	GZM-PWIN-006 Honda Goldwing GL1800 This cable is equipped with a power plug compatible with the Honda Goldwing GL1800 only and locates below the left rider pouch for an easy access connection.
	GZM-PWIN-007 Bare ended input cable 3 metre Specially designed for boat installations, this cable features a splash proof inline fuseholder with bare wire ends. Cable: 3 metres long.

If you need to power multiple devices simultaneously, this can be achieved by means of a RAM triple adaptor plate (RAP-333) plus the associated device cradles. 	GZM-PWIN-SPL2 Input splitter 1 to 2 This accessory allows you to split the input power to 2 power converter boxes or it can be used as a direct device output source. It is a useful part for when two devices need to be powered simultaneously.
	GZM-PWIN-SPL3 Input splitter 1 to 3 This accessory allows you to the split the input power to 3 power converter boxes or it can be used as a direct device output source. It is a useful part for when several devices need to be powered simultaneously.

2-Q~Power Direct device output cables

In some cases, devices that typically connect directly to the vehicle’s 12V power electrical system can share same connection as the Q-Power box trough the use of a splitter GZM-PWIN-SPLx. Example is the following cable:

GZM-PWUT-GRM01 Garmin GPS receivers, 4 pin connector.
These GPS receivers can be powered from a 12 volt battery. However, this cable provides a neat and

tidy installation with a single battery wiring. Suitable for: Garmin III+, III, III Pilot, II, II+, V, 12, 12XL, 38, 40, 45XL, 48, 60 series, 72, 76 series, StreetPilot series (not StreetPilot 26xx), MAP176, MAP196, MAP295.

3-Q~Power converter box

GZM-PSU-BOX Power Converter Box

The Power Converter Box is Q~Power core component, in the sense it manages the voltages to power the various gadgets supported by the system. It is built using a strong enclosure for the electronics, being a waterproof device able to support the difficult environmental conditions of motorcycling or boating.

The GZM-PSU-BOX connects to any of the input cables available trough a waterproof connector. The power input lead of this unit is 30 cm long.

On the other end, the GZM-PSU-BOX connects to any of the different output cables available, trough an environmentaly protected connector. A weather cover is supplied to close this connector from dust and rain when not in use.

Additionnaly, the design of the enclosure allows various types of installation. Either it can be used standalone, for example inside a motorcycle tank bag, or fixed to a panel with screws or even more importantly together with a RAM Mounting System. In this case the special design of the enclosure allows it to be 'sandwiched' between the cradle and the base with ball. Two screws are supplied with the unit for this purpose.

The GZM-PSU-BOX Power Converter Box is included in all preconfigured Packs (click here for them). For a new installation it is easier to purchase Q~power in packs, please check.

Q~Power Output Cables

Power output cables connect to the Q~Power converter box GZM-PSU-BOX in one end and to the adapters in the other.

GZM-PWUT-5V Output cable for 5 volt devices
This cable plugs into the power converter box output connector, and has a female connector for all

interchangeable male adapters of the Q~Power product line. Cable: 20 cm long.

GZM-PWUT-PTB Output cable with power transfer
This cable plugs into the power converter box output connector, and has a Nokia type 3.5mm male

connector for all interchangeable female adapters of the Q~Power product line. This unit contains

electronics to control the charge of many popular mobile phones. Cable: 40 cm long.

GZM-PWUT-EXT Output extension cable
This cable is a power output extension to allow the charge of remote devices. Typical use for this is the

charge of a gadget held inside a tank bag. Cable: 1 metre long.
